According to Robin Dunbar, evolution anthropologist the number of people with who we can keep a close relationship, a friendship, is limited to 150. This is due to the size of the neocortex, that part of the brain used for thinking and language.

Although the Internet facilitated the connection with multiple people, mainly because of the social networks, Dunbar says that at a personal level it’s impossible to overcome this initial programming of the brain.

Facebook, for example, allows you to create a network of 5000 friends, however many people are uncomfortable of sharing private details of their life with simple buddies.

That’s what inspired the creators of the Path social network, that considerably narrows the number of friends, limitating it to 50.

Dave Morin, former executive director at Facebook and Apple bets on the fact that people want a more private interaction, with a narrowed social circle, based more on personal relationships.

Based on the research of Dunbar, Morin estimates that 50 is the limit of the number of friends in this network.

“Usually there are around 5 people you trust, 20 that you consider to be your “best friends” and 50 people that form your personal network. This is why Path was built ” said Morin.

The new social network which was released on Monday appears like a service focused on photorgaphy built for smartphones and which allows people to share their personal details only to people they trust.

Currently, Path offers a free application for iPhone, and applications for Android or Blackberry are going to be developed very soon.

This means that Path doesn’t compete with Facebook or other social networks, it’s more like a complementary service, that allows you to control your personal details.
